Don’t crash your car or else you’ll have to sell your car! Winter is officially here and that means bad road conditions are here as well! Now that the New Year has rung in and the holidays are nearly behind us, I figured we do a little refresher course on our winter driving. In my previous post we went over how to avoid holiday traffic in New York, now were going to go over how to avoid accidents in winter. It’s amazing to see people in the North-East area becoming seemingly unaware of the winter road conditions. In the month of December there were 860 motor vehicle accidents that proved to be fatal according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation. As the winter season kicks into full swing you will see this number increase. Of course if you take the proper precautions and tips, you can help decrease this number.

Winter Driving Safety Tips
Driving in the snow can be particularly hazardous, which is why you need to be careful. Car accidents seem to increase in numbers during the winter season. Luckily, I put together a list of winter driving tips that will help you avoid any unnecessary accidents on the road.
Take a Defensive Driving Course
This should be your first step into road safety. Defensive driving courses in NY are relatively cheap. Depending on what state you live in, the price may vary. As a bonus you can register for defensive driving courses online, which can be a real time saver as well.
It’s Best to Get Snow Tires
Before any winter elements hit your area, it would be wise to have snow tires on your car. These tires have specially designed tread patterns meant to grip better on snow and ice. There are many suppliers of discount snow tires around so you don’t ever have to worry about not finding one. In addition to the snow tires, you also have the option of affixing snow chains to them. This will give you extra superior traction in the snow.
Be Aware of Other Drivers
This should be a no-brainer but many car accidents are caused by lack of awareness. While on the road, keep an eye out for other drivers.
Slow Down!
I don’t want to sound like a stereotypical old man who yells at every car that drives down his street, but in all seriousness, the winter time is no time to speed. Your safety is way more important than making it to your destination on time. People tend to underestimate Mother Nature while driving. Most winter accidents are caused by people exceeding the speed limit. Because of slick conditions, a fatal car accident could ensue and also remember that black ice exists. These seemingly invisible patches of ice on roads have taken out many motorists.
Hopefully these tips will help you on your way to driving safely in the winter. Since Christmas, I have seen countless news stories on car accidents. Not only are you looking out for the safety of yourself but you are looking out for the safety of other motorists as well. Winter road conditions are no joke. If you make the slightest mistake, you could jeopardize the safety of yourself and those around you so take a deep breath and slow down.
